The MacBook Air was one of the first devices to receive the Apple M SoC treatment. One of the reasons Apple chose the MacBook Air to feature Apple’s inherent processor was its mass appeal and higher sales. The Air has always been Apple’s highest-selling laptop, with price and portability on its side. And now, owing to its M1 processor, it’s also got high performance. So, it’s safe to say we have a lot to look forward to with the 2022 MacBook Air launch.
I am using the 2020 MacBook Air with M1, and this device has probably turned out to be the best Apple product I own. Yes, the MacBook Pro does offer better performance and the newly launched 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro with the upgraded CPUs provide a hell lot more, but hey, I’m not a graphic designer or filmmaker. The added power of the M1 Pro and M1 Max is likely to be overkill for me. That’s why, when the Appleverse expands in 2022, one of the things I’m extremely looking forward to is the launch of the 2022 MacBook Air.
Round-up of 2022 MacBook Air Rumours
2022 might mark a revamp in design for the MacBook Air. Like the MacBook Pro, the Air is also in line for refreshment, and Apple designers are working on delivering a somewhat old-school MacBook look with a modern touch. Like the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro released this year, rumours say the 2022 MacBook Air will sport slimmer bezels. However, there is no word if the Air will also have a notch.
Apple might go ahead with an unconventional choice of colours for the 2022 MacBook Air that’ll mimic the complexion seen on the 24-inch iMac and iPad Air 4. Corresponding to the choice of colours, Apple might replace the black keyboard with a white tone to match the body’s colour scheme. It’ll be interesting to see how the white colour holds up in the real world. It’s hard enough keeping my black keyboard clean!
Setting the 2022 MacBook Air apart from the Pro variants will possibly be an upgraded M1 processor, christened M2. The M2 will likely enhance the performance and speed of the 2022 MacBook Air, but I doubt it’ll come any close to the M1 Pro or Max SoCs as the company would want the MacBook Pro to be their top-of-the-line performance machine.
Webcams, Screen Size, and Ports
Like this year’s MacBook Pro models, the upcoming Air might come with a much-needed 1080p webcam. Apple might also include a mini-LED display and increase the screen size without changing the compact form factor thanks to thinner bezels. Unlike the current Air’s thicker at the back and tapering slimmer design upfront, the 2022 MacBook Air is expected to have the same thickness all over, similar to the new MacBook Pros.
Thus, we expect the next Air to come with a MagSafe port for charging, two or four USB-C ports, and a headphone jack. However, the SD card slot and the HDMI port might be reserved for Pro laptops only.
MacBook Air or Just MacBook?
Remember Apple’s 12-inch MacBook device? It didn’t have the suffix of Air or Pro; it was just a MacBook. So, the next Air might not be called the Air at all. Some rumours point out that the next 2022 MacBook Air launch might be a 2022 MacBook launch.
Shakespeare once said, “What’s in a name?” As long as the 2022 MacBook Air heightens the current Air’s capabilities, I won’t complain if it’s just called a MacBook. As the new 2022 MacBook Air’s launch won’t happen until mid-2022, we’ll keep updating you on recent developments and the rumours leading up to the launch. I am super excited to see my favourite MacBook in a new avatar. Do let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
