Mission Impossible: Apple’s Ever Evasive AirPower Mat Cancelled

Oh, how the Apple gods have tricked us into taking a bite off their misleading promises. They led us on, and they let us down. Remember all the hype surrounding the launch of Apple’s multi-device wireless charger – AirPower mat? We had written about it too! But in a devastatingly unexpected turn of events, Apple announced that the whole AirPower Mat launch has been cancelled!

Yes, you read that right! They scrapped the entire project! You think that’s outrageous? We do too! So, what reason does the tech giant cite for this bomb of a news?

    Why, iGod? Why!

Apple cancelled AirPower Mat after months and months of its speculated release. Granted, Apple doesn’t have a track record of launching their products on promised dates. But never once have we been robbed of a product altogether. And thanks to them, we lived by the mantra ‘better late than never’.

But why, do you ask, did they pull such a trick on us with AirPower Mat?

The Cupertino-based company first announced AirPower Mat in September 2017 during the iPhone X launch event. They unveiled the new features of iPhone X, one of which included wireless charging. In the same event, the leading tech company also promised the launch of the AirPower charging mat in 2018.

2018 came and went, and we were led to believe that 2019 would be the year. They told us that all the engineering issues and overheating issues were taken care of. And the product would finally see the light of the day in the first half of the year. Alas, there is no product. In fact, there will be no product at all.

Apple SVP of hardware engineering Dan Riccio said in a statement, “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”

And with that, we can stop dreaming about the impossible AirPower Mat – a device that could charge three devices simultaneously. The boxes of the new AirPods may have pictures of the mat, and mentions of the same. But now, all that means nothing.

If you’re as disappointed as we are, pour all your thoughts into the comments and let us know that we’re not the only ones feeling the way we are.
