Here’s What Happens When You Sell Your Kidney to Buy an iPhone

    Spread the word

Attention fellas! Remember the “I’ll have to sell my kidney to afford the latest iPhone” joke? This gentleman decided to go ahead and try it out for real.

A 25-year-old Chinese man named Wang Shankun, who is now bedridden with organ failure, decided to turn the popular ‘selling my kidney for iPhone’ meme into reality and … wait for it …. sold his kidney to buy an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 eight years ago!!  For those of you who suck at math, the dude was 17 years old when he sold his kidney on the black market. Yup, you may lose your shit now!

While the surgery was somewhat a ‘success’ at the time, complications have now lead to renal failure of the remaining kidney, leaving him bedridden for days at a time. He now relies on regular dialysis to keep himself alive. Doctors believe that unsanitary conditions during the surgery and a lack of aftercare was to blame for his renal failure. You may also put down sheer lack of common sense and abundance of stupidity to the reasons why he’s currently hugging a bed and wallowing in misery!

Wang had made headlines after pulling this stunt and was quoted saying ‘’Why do I need a second kidney?” just before his operation.

Well, now you know, my friend, now you know!

All Wang got was just over R.s 2 lacs ($3,000), a nasty infection, and the latest iPhone in exchange for his kidney in 2011 after the supposed gang leaders (who arranged the sale) took their cut. In the end, his parents, who were unaware of the whole transaction (Great parenting, guys!), ended up paying much more to keep their son alive. They even sued the middleman and the 5 doctors involved for 2.2 million Yuan (US$320,284), but that doesn’t change the fact that Wang is now facing severe organ failure and will probably never live a normal life again.

As you can see, calling Wang’s act crazy is probably an understatement. We known people are willing to go extreme lengths to get their hands on the latest iPhones and other Apple gadgets, but this is just taking things too far. All jokes apart, we sincerely hope no one repeats such stupidity because no materialistic fascination is worth jeopardizing your health and courting death, simply because you valued shiny doodads over your life. Duh!
