Apple was the first to introduce Touch ID, and now, nearly four years after that, Apple is all set to revolutionise the technology again with Touch ID 2.0.

A new patent from Apple has surfaced that indicates the direction in which Apple is headed with regards to Touch ID 2.0. And the future sure looks quite inviting.

We might get to see advanced biometrics in future iPhones.

    AppleInsider reports:

“Apple is rumored to replace iPhone’s Touch ID home button with alternative bio-recognition hardware when it launches an OLED version of the handset later this year, but the technology enabling that transition is so far an unknown.”

The patent is titled Acoustic Imaging System Architecture.

This technology talks about “an array of acoustic transducers” that will be embedded within the newer iPhones. Essentially, these transducers could activate on voice and relay commands to the phone. This could be the basis of a completely voice controlled iPhone, one that doesn’t even unlock without your voice.

Voice control could be integrated with other services.

The patent goes on to explain how “in some cases the system might be configured to scan for particular body parts like a user’s ear or a skin pattern in order to determine how the device is being held.”

There are indications of “facial recognition” and “touch sensor” being integrated right along side voice recognition. Together, they’d form what’s being called the Touch ID 2.0.

Just to make it clear, these are still in concept stages and definitely will NOT be available on iPhone 8. We’re not likely to see these at least for two years more. However, this is a good indication from what to expect from our iPhones in the near future.
