Every year – every iPhone – every review – ever-so-slightly different.
Apple’s annual keynotes had started to feel like an Apple TV production of The Truman Show with Tim Cook playing a bootleg version of Jim Carrey in every season. Thankfully, someone finally opened the stuck up doors at the Steve Jobs Center to let in some fresh air. (No more puns, I promise. Don’t want to make you airsick.)
iPhone Air is the replacement model for Plus series iPhones, which were the replacement models for the mini series iPhones. However, this one is more than a screen subtraction or addition. It’s a lot more!
The biggest flex of this truly new iPhone is its super thin design … hence, the name Air. In fact, at 5.6 millimetre, it’s the thinnest iPhone ever.
The how-did-they-do-it thinness comes with a lot of they-had-to-do-it riders like a single camera, ceramic shield on front & back, and even an optional battery pack. Is the sleekness worthy of all these ‘compromises’? Only Thor will tell … I meant, only time will tell.
iPhone Air also addresses the 3 biggest complaints from the ‘regular people’ iPhones – It brings in 120 Hz refresh rate, has Always On Display, and starts at 256GB storage. Thanks, Timmy!
Like every year, cameras are better than the previous gen iPhones. You now get an all new 18MP Center Stage front camera for selfies that’ll capture even more freckles on your and your friends’ faces in both portrait and landscape modes.
In the nerdy stuff, Air is a Pro. It has the high end A19 Pro Chip, with new N1 Chip, and an improved C1X Chip. Simply put, it’s super fast in every way.
Is iPhone Air the bestest iPhone model that I’d recommend as confidently as I recommend Aglio e Olio over any other pasta? Don’t know … yet. There are much bigger geeks out there who’ll analyse and compare every millimetre of this 6.6 inch device to draw decisive conclusions. I’ll be reading some of those myself to make up my mind. However, that’s not what we are here for today.
Jobs pulling the new MacBook Air out of an envelope in 2009 was marketing magic. But remember, just 5 years ago, Tim Cook had pulled the iPhone 12 mini out of a tiny suitcase as well. Both products have had very different fates. Even the presenters were chalk & Steve. Yet, the common thread tying them together was innovation. iPhone Air is an innovation.
We’ve been asking for iPhone innovation for years, so it’s only fair that we tip our hats to Apple’s design team for being Apple again.
Will I consider buying the iPhone Air for myself? Hell no! I’m not tipping my credit card for paying ₹1.20 lacs to Apple’s marketing team for being Apple again.
