iPhone 7 Camera Problem And How to (sort of) Fix It

2016 hasn’t finished doing enough damage yet. Apple is being smothered by more bad news. The iPhone 7 camera is the latest in the Apple family to come under criticism, as users the world over are complaining that it’s malfunctioning.

In a news piece by Mashable, the popular blog said —

A number of people are reporting their iPhone 7 Plus cameras are “breaking”, with the rear camera(s) lenses only showing a black screen, or flashes of green or purple.

With the number of people facing this problem starting to increase, users took to support forums to find a solution. At first, most of the discussion boards suggested a simple reboot and/or resetting the phone to factory settings. However, that did not fix the issues in a large majority of the phones. In fact, even the phones that worked fine after being rebooted started experiencing the same problem in a couple of days.

A Reddit user, going by the screen name “teryakiwok”, took his iPhone to the Apple Store, but to no avail. This is what he had to say about his experience:

“[I] took the handset in to the store and the guy said ‘yep, seen this before’ […] anyway he said we have a load of cameras in stock ready to replace so i said sorry my good man I would like my flagship telecommunications device replacing. Long story short I’m now dealing with Apple CS, but in my defense the ‘Genius’ did say he wouldn’t accept a repair if it was his phone.”

While the rest of the story is typically like any visit to an Apple repair centre, the point to note here is that Apple has already received multiple complaints regarding this particular iPhone 7 camera issue. And like many of their problems in the recent past, they’ve chosen to more or less ignore it.

While we wait for Apple to first acknowledge the issue, and then wait for them to send in a patch, there’s some basic procedure you can follow to (hopefully) fix the issue.

“Clear the cache partition. This could fix the camera failed problem on Appe iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Select on Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. Then select on Manage Storage. After that tap an item in Documents and Data. Then slide unwanted items to the left and tap Delete. Finally, tap Edit > Delete All to remove all the app’s data.”

And now pray that it works!
