    Apple price hike

Why Has Apple Hit Users With A Colossal Price Hike

Apple dropped a major shocker on its fans yesterday, announcing steep price hikes across multiple product categories. The move stings even more because it comes after what had otherwise been a surprisingly consumer-friendly year for the company. From the affordable MacBook Pro to price concessions on services and a broader push to make the Apple ecosystem more accessible, 2026 seemed to signal a welcome shift in Apple’s pricing strategy.

But that ship has sailed now!

If there’s one lesson Apple continues to teach us, it’s this: never let them know your next move. While analysts had been warning for months that rising component costs would eventually force the company to raise prices, few expected the increases to be this steep. Now that the revised pricing is official—with some premium configurations costing up to ₹1,70,000 more than before—the warning signs have turned into a nightmarish reality.

The increase affects almost the entire Mac lineup, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro. All iPad models have also become more expensive, alongside products like the Apple TV, HomePod, HomePod mini and Vision Pro.

Interestingly, Apple’s biggest consumer products—the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods—have escaped the price hike for now.

So, what exactly is going on?

    It’s all about memory

The biggest reason behind Apple’s decision is the skyrocketing cost of memory components. DRAM and NAND flash—the chips that power your Mac’s RAM and SSD storage—have become significantly more expensive over the past year. These are among the most critical components in almost every modern computing device, and their rising costs have become impossible for Apple to absorb indefinitely.

AI is consuming the world’s chip supply

The memory shortage isn’t happening in isolation. The explosive growth of artificial intelligence has created an unprecedented demand for high-performance memory chips. Companies building massive AI data centres are purchasing enormous quantities of memory chips, leaving less supply for consumer electronics manufacturers. And it’s the basic economics rule that has come into play—as demand continues to outpace supply, prices across the industry have surged and continue to do so.

Apple can no longer absorb the extra costs

For months, Apple  (apparently) held off on passing these increased manufacturing costs to consumers, choosing instead to absorb the impact on its margins. But with memory prices continuing to climb, the company has now decided that maintaining previous prices is no longer sustainable. Rather than limiting the increase to select premium products, Apple has rolled it out across much of its Mac and iPad portfolio.

Interestingly, Apple’s biggest bestseller has escaped the price hike—for now. Despite revising prices across much of its Mac and iPad lineup, the company has left the iPhone range untouched, perhaps recognising that it remains the centerpiece of its business and the product most sensitive to consumer pricing. Whether that holds true in the coming months, however, will largely depend on how long component costs continue to climb.

Of course, this isn’t just the India story. Apple has implemented these price increases globally, although not on a similar scale. And unfortunately, India is in the list of the worst hits.

The bigger question, however, is what this means for the future.

If AI adoption continues at its current pace—and every indicator suggests it will—the demand for memory and storage chips is only expected to grow. That could mean higher manufacturing costs for laptops, tablets and even smartphones over the next few years. In many ways, this could mark the beginning of a new era for commercial technology—one where the AI revolution doesn’t just change how we use our devices, but also how much we have to pay for them.
