Apple TV Gets The Much Needed Upgrade. It’s Game on Now!

‘Why you should NOT buy the new Apple TV in India’ is one of our most popular articles till date. It listed 5 big reasons why the latest Apple TV (back in November 2015) was not worth your money.

After more than a year of waiting, Apple has finally fixed one of our complaints. It’s been announced that the game download size limit on the 4th gen Apple TV  has been increased from 200 MB to 4 GB. Yeah!!!

I am not sure if congratulations are due if you come late to the party, but our resentment for Apple’s stupidity aside, we’re glad they saw the error (read: stupidity) in their previous restriction and upgraded the Apple TV.

A page on Apple’s Developer News forum announced:

“The size limit of a tvOS app bundle has increased from 200 MB to 4 GB, so you can include more media in your submission and provide a complete, rich user experience upon installation. Also, tvOS apps can use On-Demand Resources to host up to 20 GB of additional content on the App Store.”

    Size Matters

This increase in the size of storage now lets game developers bundle more content right into the original download package. Previously, with the limit set to a measly 200 MB, game developers had a hard time producing content. In the modern gaming world of advanced graphics, 200 MB wasn’t going to make the cut. We’re glad Apple realised that before their product vanished slowly into oblivion.

    Death to (by) Download

Even before this change, you could still play larger games on Apple TV. However, you had to stream the entire thing. With low download speeds here in India, not to mention the low limit on data download, gaming on Apple TV was a pain in the ass. No wonder Apple TV couldn’t take on the likes of XBox and Play Station and was failing miserably to create a stir. Thankfully, Apple came to their senses and helped us kill the misery of download.

    Leading by Example

Now that more and more gaming titles will be interested in developing for Apple TV, we can expect people to start demanding more onboard storage. The current maximum of 64 GB isn’t going to cut it anymore. And that’s the high-end model! Makes you wonder if we are living in 2017.

But now that Apple has increased the bundled app size to 4 GB, we should expect, nay, demand, that Apple do the same for Apple TV’s onboard storage as well. While 1 TB is ideal, we’re realistic in our expectations. After years of hue and cry, Apple buffed up the storage on iPhone to 32 GB. We’ll be quite happy if we can get 256 GB on the Apple TV.

Tim Cook must be LOLing so loud right now!
