Apple’s iPad mini Might Finally Ditch Its Fear of Water

For years, Apple’s iPhones have been the daredevils of the tech world—braving accidental dunks in rainstorms, sinks, tubs, and basically, any water body imaginable. Thanks to their impressive water-resistance design (present in all models since the 2018 iPhone XS).

While iPhone has been living its best waterproof life, iPad has been left high and dry—literally, with no real protection against accidental dunks or splashes. However, things are possibly going to change soon. There’s a rumour going around that Apple is working on a redesigned iPad mini that can finally take up swimming lessons, with an improved resistance to liquid intrusion.

But here’s the twist: allegedly Apple is not just copy pasting the iPhone’s water-resistance design in the iPad mini. Apparently, they are experimenting with a completely new design altogether that involves a vibration-based speaker system. So, instead of using the usual gaskets and adhesives to seal up the speaker holes that end up becoming the entry point for water and open the floodgates into the system, they might just eliminate the holes themselves.

Of course, details are still murky (pun intended). There’s no word on when this waterproof iPad mini might make a splash in the market. However, this development sounds promising. And if this is indeed true, it can make the iPad mini not only more durable but also more versatile—and might just inspire a new wave (last one) of Apple devices built to handle the elements.

If the Apple team were to ask me, if they should go ahead with this redesign, I’d say, “Water you waiting for!”
