After years of speculation, rumours, and endless name-calling (Fold, Ultra, and whatnot), Apple finally unveiled the iPhone Duo this year. And in true Apple fashion, it stuck to its short, three-letter nomenclature, settling on Duo. An apt name for a device that essentially gives you two screens in one!
Now that the long-awaited foldable is finally here, it’s time to see if it lives up to all the hype and expectations. It certainly exceeds expectations when we talk about the cost, but what about performance, usability, and everything else? Let’s take a look.
Design and Display
The iPhone Duo makes a strong first impression with its titanium frame, sturdy hinge, and premium finish. Its passport-style design makes it wider than a conventional smartphone when folded, and it may take some time to get used to handling the phone, both folded and unfolded.
The display is the talk of the town. The 5.4-inch outer screen is suitable for everyday tasks, while the 7.6-inch inner display offers a more immersive experience for watching videos, browsing websites, and working across applications. Both OLED displays deliver excellent colours, brightness, and clarity, with ProMotion support providing smooth scrolling.
As per multiple users’ review, the crease is not at all noticeable. However, there are black bars and interface inconsistencies in certain apps which can detract from the experience.
Performance and Software
Powered by Apple’s A20 Pro processor and 12GB of RAM, the iPhone Duo delivers the performance expected from a premium flagship. Switching between applications, editing documents, browsing, and gaming feels smooth, with no noticeable lag during demanding tasks.
Native applications work well across both displays. Multitasking, however, leaves room for improvement. The ability to run two applications side by side is useful, but the performance apparently falls short, especially when compared to other foldable products in the market.
Battery
Battery life is one of the iPhone Duo’s strongest features. Despite powering two displays, it can last up to two days with light usage and around a day and a half with heavier use. This is honestly a surprise! Kudos to the Apple team for finally figuring out the battery optimisation.
Camera
It’s Apple, so of course, the cameras are going to be just fine.
The device features dual 48MP rear cameras that capture detailed photographs, perform well in low light, and offer impressive video recording capabilities. The foldable design introduces useful photography features, including hands-free shooting (since it can stand on its own) and the ability to preview images on the outer display.
However, the absence of a dedicated telephoto camera limits zoom versatility. This might not sit well with users who prioritise advanced photography.
An Unexpected Arm Workout
At 254 grams, the iPhone Duo is no lightweight, quite literally. Holding it for extended periods, especially while scrolling through social media or watching videos, can leave your hands and wrists feeling the strain. Think of it as an unexpected addition to your daily fitness routine. 10 reps of endless reel scrolls and you are looking at defined forearms in a month or two.
The Verdict
The iPhone Duo has some decent features. It does a few things well, while others could certainly use some improvement. But then again, that is pretty much any smartphone ever made. The one major difference here, however, is the price range.
Personally, this feels like a phone that demands far too much from its users. The unusual display size and proportions almost defeat the purpose of calling it a mobile phone. And then there is the weight. It is so heavy that I can only hope it never falls on your face while you are scrolling in bed. That could turn a relaxing bedtime routine into a serious trip to the hospital.
There is also the constant care required to keep the device safe. You would have to be extra cautious about how you handle it, knowing that any damage could come with a rather painful repair bill.
To make matters worse, Apple has done away with some already beloved features, including Face ID. And all of this for what, exactly?
Sure, it is an engineering marvel, and there is no denying the effort that goes into creating a foldable device of this calibre. But impressive engineering does not necessarily translate into a user-friendly experience. At nearly ₹3 lakh, you would expect a device that makes everyday life easier, not one that requires you to readjust your habits.
The iPhone Duo may be a technological achievement, but as a practical everyday device, it leaves a lot to be desired. For now, it feels like a costly inconvenience dressed up as innovation.
The iPhone Duo is available in stores in India starting today (23rd October, 2026) with a price of just ₹2,99,900.
