iOS 27 Is Here… Well, Kind Of!

iPhone’s latest software update, iOS 27 is here (well, at least, as a preview for developers today) and there’s not a lot to unpack, surprisingly. Announced at WWDC 2026 last night, the update focuses on making everyday tasks faster, more intuitive, and increasingly powered by AI (thanks to the Gemini partnership earlier this year).

    Hey, new Siri!

The headline feature is undoubtedly the new Siri. Apple has transformed its voice assistant into a far better conversational and capable tool, although they can’t really take the credit for this one. Siri can now be accessed directly through Spotlight search or via its own dedicated app, which is a sure sign of the voice assistant jumping ranks with this update.

    Gemini Apple Intelligence

Apple has also introduced several additional AI features, woven throughout the operating system, under what it calls the “next-gen Apple Intelligence”. Apps such as Photos, Notes, Reminders, and Shortcuts have all received smarter capabilities. For example, in Photos, users can remove unwanted objects, expand image backgrounds, and reframe shots after they’ve been taken. Also, creating automations in Shortcuts is becoming easier thanks to natural-language commands.

    Improved Design Language

Visually, Apple is refining the Liquid Glass design language introduced last year. The interface now offers greater customisation, including adjustable transparency levels that allow users to decide how subtle—or dramatic—the glass-like effects should appear. The result is a cleaner look that feels modern without sacrificing readability. Additionally, the UI has been refined with more consistent refraction effects and better contrast, while app icons are now expected to appear sharper and more detailed.

    Parental Controls

Child online safety is a key focus in iOS 27 and rightfully so with the amount of iPad and iPhone kids increasing in numbers. With this update, Apple is giving parents more control over their children’s accounts, strengthening privacy protections and supporting healthier digital habits. Two new tools, “Ask to Browse” and “Ask to Buy,” will let parents approve access to sensitive content or authorise online purchases.

Apple has also redesigned Screen Time for kids’ accounts. In addition to more flexible custom time limits for specific app categories, there is now a more detailed usage overview that tracks a child’s time spent on apps, gaming, and web browsing.

    Compatibility Maxxing

Perhaps the best news for existing iPhone owners is compatibility. Apple says iOS 27 will support devices going back to the iPhone 11, continuing the company’s reputation for long-term software support. While some advanced AI features will remain exclusive to newer hardware, most users will still benefit from performance improvements and quality-of-life upgrades.

    Other Itty Bitty Things

Safari is also getting a productivity boost. New features can automatically organize tabs into groups and notify users when changes occur on selected webpages. While a pretty small addition, improvements like these do end up making the iPhone experience more seamless.

To sum up, iOS 27 isn’t bringing any major overhaul, other than the new Siri. Instead, it is just making the experience smarter, smoother, and a little more personal.

The update will be available in public beta for anyone to try starting next month, followed by a final rollout to the general public in the fall.
