I’m all for body positivity … when we’re talking about actual living things. My phone, though? That’s a different story.
According to the latest rumors, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is set to gain a little extra… everything. Sources claim that the phone could measure around 9mm thick and weigh about 240 grams, making it roughly 0.25mm thicker and 7 grams heavier than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max. That would make it Apple’s heaviest iPhone yet. So it’s basically pro maxing, weight-wise also! While I know that it’s not a drastic difference technically, it is still quite heavy for a phone.
Apparently, the extra bulk isn’t there for cosmetic reasons—it’s said to be making room for a larger battery and possibly an improved cooling hardware.
Personally, I am not a fan of heavy and large phones. I don’t like the feel of holding such a device in my hand and neither do I like lugging them around. Plus, I’m not sure if everyone can relate to this but, as a habitual* lying down and using the phone* kind of person, it’s very painful when these things fall on your face. The heavier the device, higher the risk of a bruised lip or eye. So based on these grounds, I’m not very much thrilled at the idea of an even heavier iPhone.
I feel like Apple is on a generational run of making iPhones in all shapes and sizes. On the one hand, we have the iPhone Air (light and breezy just like its name and a major fall risk) and on the other they are presumably making the heaviest iPhone yet. On top of it, there’s also the iPhone Ultra (aka the foldable iPhone) in the works which surely is going to be heavy and big. I’m just waiting for the day they launch a circular one!
If these rumors are indeed accurate though, I genuinely hope the larger battery offers a meaningful jump in endurance and not something flimsy. But if the payoff is just another hour or two of screen time, I’m not sure it’s worth asking our pockets—and our wrists—to do the heavy lifting.
