Apple Agrees to Pay ₹3625 Crores for Slowing Down iPhones!

Settling the class-action lawsuit on the infamous ‘Batterygate’, Apple has decided to compensate all eligible users with a minimum of approx. ₹1,800 per iPhone. The settlement, yet to be approved by the District Judge of California, could mean the tech-giant coughing up as much as a whooping ₹3,625 crores!

    Is it for Indian users?

Nope. Don’t get excited yet. The settlement, sadly, brings no benefits to the Indians as of now. Apple has agreed upon compensating users of the US only and no information has been rolled out on how the settlement is to be done internationally.

However, since a huge chunk of its users are in India (and other countries outside the US), we’re hoping for an update on this from the tech-giant soon.

    What actually is Batterygate?

Two years ago, Apple put to rest all the rumours when it accepted that it was indeed slowing down iPhones to ensure a “smoothed out” battery performance. Of course. Who in their right mind would even think that they could be edging existing users to upgrade to newer models. That’s just… silly, right?

If there’s a conspiracy theorist in the crowd, more info on the ‘slow-iPhone’ disease can be found here. Moving on.

    Who’s covered?

According to Reuters, the settlement will cover all iPhone 6 series, 7 series, and SE that ran iOS 10.2.1 or later. It will also cover iPhones 7 and 7 Plus that ran iOS 11.2 or later before 21st December 2017.

While we still have no updates on our own compensation, US users may soon be receiving them. More details are expected through official Apple channels once the settlement is finalized by the California court, intimating affected users on how to get in touch with the company for compensation.
