    Apple’s Sustainability Push In India

    Spread the word

For years, large technology companies have faced criticism for the environmental cost of their operations. From energy-hungry data centers to growing electronic waste, their processes have constantly been under scrutiny. However, it looks like Apple is hell-bent on subverting that narrative. They seem to be paying particular attention to India, where the company is increasingly investing not just in business growth, but also in sustainability initiatives.

Earlier this month, Apple announced a ₹100 crore investment aimed at expanding renewable energy infrastructure in India. In partnership with renewable energy developer CleanMax, the company plans to help build more than 150 megawatts of clean energy capacity — enough to power nearly 1.5 lakh Indian households annually.

The India focus is significant because Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the country has expanded rapidly over the past few years. As more iPhones and components are assembled in India, the company is also under pressure to ensure that this industrial growth does not come with an equally large environmental cost.

Beyond renewable energy, Apple has also partnered with WWF-India and Saahas Zero Waste to tackle plastic waste and strengthen recycling systems in regions such as Goa and Coimbatore. The initiative focuses on building better waste collection and material recovery systems while working closely with local communities and waste workers. How a capitalist, tech-corporation working more efficiently towards cleaning the country than the government is beyond me, but we live in times where nothing should really come as a surprise.

Another major step is Apple’s support for green startups in India through a partnership with Acumen. The company is funding early-stage ventures working in areas such as waste management, circular economy solutions, clean transportation, and more.

These initiatives are part of Apple’s broader goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire business and supply chain by 2030, which I must say, is commendable. Hopefully, they continue at it and keep finding new ways to help the planet—because if we continue damaging the planet at this pace, there soon won’t be any trees left. Apples or otherwise.
